Video settings, in depth
What are the right video settings on a Nikon Z6 III — file types, 6K and 4K frame rates, and N-Log?
Choose the codec before the size
Video file type decides which frame sizes exist, so it is chosen first. H.265 10-bit (MOV) is the working default. ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit serves edit-heavy workflows. N-RAW 12-bit (NEV) and ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV) record true RAW — at the cost of Electronic VR, in-camera playback/editing conveniences, and HDMI output above 1080p while selected. N-RAW also has its own quality switch: Video quality (N-RAW), High quality or Normal.
Climb the frame-size ladder deliberately
3840×2160 (4K UHD) at 60p is the everyday rung and exists in every file type; 4K reaches 120p in ProRes 422 HQ and H.265, and Full HD reaches 240p in H.265 for deep slow motion. 5376×3024 (5.4K) records at 30p in H.265 and only reaches 60p in ProRes 422 HQ. 6048×3402 (6K) belongs to the RAW types — 60p and 50p in N-RAW only — and the RAW table adds a DX-format 3984×2240 option that reaches 120p in N-RAW.
N-Log is a tone mode
Select N-Log as the Tone mode with a 10-bit or RAW file type active — it cannot be chosen with 8-bit types. Nikon states 13+ stops (1300%) of dynamic range for H.265 10-bit with ISO sensitivity at its lowest, ISO 800. While N-Log is on, Set Picture Control, Active D-Lighting, High ISO NR, Skin softening and Portrait impression balance are unavailable, and Hi ISO settings close. It is footage meant to be graded; Nikon's N-Log LUTs are free from the Nikon Download Center. Custom Setting g13, View assist, restores contrast to the preview only.
Destination and heat discipline
Videos record to the slot chosen at Destination when two cards are inserted — stills slot settings do not govern them. Send RAW and high-rate work to the CFexpress/XQD slot on a fast card (Nikon recommends at least 250 MB/s for N-RAW and ProRes RAW). Each shot may run up to 125 minutes, and a 660 GB card holds about 198 minutes of H.265 8-bit at 5.4K 60p or 4K 120p — but the manual warns recording may end sooner if the battery fades or the camera's temperature rises. When the high-temperature warning appears, stop; the body, battery and cards may be hot, and cards come out only after the warning clears.
Build the chain end to end — H.265 10-bit, 4K 60p, N-Log, View assist, CFexpress destination — and shoot the test clip. Flat is correct.
