Common fixes

Why does a Nikon Z6 III stop recording, save video to the wrong card, or refuse RAW — and what fixes it?

The answer — share this
Most Z6 III grief is four things: heat ending a take, video following Destination instead of the stills slots, a card too slow for RAW, and a detection category that does not match the subject.
Heat: stop at the warning, wait before pulling cards  ·  Video card: Video Recording Menu → Destination  ·  RAW: CFexpress at 250 MB/s or faster  ·  Detection: Photo Shooting Menu → AF/MF subject detection options

Recording stops earlyHeat or the 125-minute cap. Each shot may run up to 125 minutes, and Nikon warns recording can end sooner if the camera's temperature rises. When the high-temperature warning shows, stop and cool the camera — and wait for the warning to clear before removing cards, which may be hot. Prevention: a lower rung (H.265 over RAW, 4K over 5.4K) and breaks between takes.
Video on the wrong cardDestination, not the stills slots. Videos ignore Primary slot selection and Secondary slot function entirely. With two cards in, they record to the slot chosen at Video Recording Menu → Destination. Set it once, deliberately.
RAW recording interruptsThe card is below the RAW floor. For N-RAW and ProRes RAW, Nikon recommends CFexpress cards rated at least 250 MB/s; slower cards may interrupt recording or playback at high frame sizes and rates. While a RAW type is selected, Electronic VR is unavailable and HDMI output caps at 1080p.
Detection misses the subjectWrong category — or an area where detection never runs. Match the category to the subject: cyclists and the whole fleet are Vehicle; birds have their own category beside Animal; mixed subjects belong on Auto. And detection only works in Wide-area AF, 3D-tracking and Auto-area AF — Pinpoint and Single-point switch it off.
A feature the others do not haveAuto Capture shoots without you. Photo Shooting Menu → Auto Capture fires bursts automatically when a subject meets your motion, detection and distance criteria — criteria save to User presets 1–5. Beside it sits Pixel shift shooting: a series of shifted NEF frames merged in NX Studio for a higher-resolution still.

Check Destination, match your detection category to this week's subject, then build one Auto Capture preset and let the camera take a picture without you.
