First Setup

What should you change on a Fujifilm X100VI before your first shoot?

The answer — share this
One card, formatted in the camera — this body has a single UHS-I slot, so every frame exists exactly once. Modes come from the dials: the shutter dial’s and aperture ring’s A positions decide P, S, A or M. Shoot FINE+RAW at LOSSLESS COMPRESSED, choose a film simulation on purpose — REALA ACE ships in the factory list — and bank the whole setup as CUSTOM 1.
Format: SET UP → USER SETTING → FORMAT  ·  Modes: shutter-speed dial + aperture ring A positions  ·  RAW: IMAGE QUALITY SETTING → RAW RECORDING → LOSSLESS COMPRESSED  ·  Film sim: IMAGE QUALITY SETTING → FILM SIMULATION  ·  Save: IMAGE QUALITY SETTING → EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING → CUSTOM 1

Step 1

Format the one card in the camera

MENU→SET UP→USER SETTING→FORMAT

The X100VI has one SD slot, and it supports UHS-I cards — there is no second slot and no in-camera backup copy of anything, so every frame exists exactly once until you offload it. Format the card in the camera before anything else. A 32 GB card holds about 1,330 FINE frames or 680 lossless-compressed RAW; for movies the manual asks for a UHS speed class 3 or video speed class V30 card or better. Shortcut: hold DRIVE/DELETE and press-and-hold the center of the rear command dial.

Know this: FORMAT erases ALL data on the card — including protected pictures. On a one-slot camera, offload first, format second.
Step 2

Modes live on the dials

MENU→Shutter-speed dial→Sensitivity dial — lift and turn→Aperture ring

There is no mode dial: the mode is a result of two A positions. Shutter dial A + aperture ring A = P (Program). A chosen speed + ring A = S. Dial A + a chosen aperture = A. Both chosen = M. The sensitivity dial wraps the shutter dial — lift and turn it: at A it runs your stored AUTO1 / AUTO2 / AUTO3 settings; at C the front command dial sets sensitivity, extended values 64–51200 included.

Step 3

RAW, compressed without loss

MENU→IMAGE QUALITY SETTING→RAW RECORDING

Shoot FINE+RAW, and set RAW RECORDING to LOSSLESS COMPRESSED: Fujifilm’s reversible algorithm cuts files to about 30–90% of uncompressed size with no loss of image data. The plain COMPRESSED option is lossy — it throws data away for a smaller file still. Lossless is the working setting.

Step 4

Choose your palette on purpose

MENU→IMAGE QUALITY SETTING→FILM SIMULATION

Film simulation is the palette baked into every JPEG and HEIF: 14 named simulations, from PROVIA/STANDARD (the neutral reference) through Velvia, CLASSIC CHROME, the PRO Neg. pair and ACROS — and REALA ACE is in the factory list on this body, no firmware update required. ACROS and MONOCHROME add filter variants, 20 selectable entries in all. There are no dedicated recipe slots; a recipe lives inside a custom bank.

Step 5

Bank the setup as CUSTOM 1

MENU→IMAGE QUALITY SETTING→EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING

Set IS MODE (SHOOTING SETTING) to CONTINUOUS or SHOOTING ONLY. Then save the whole configuration: EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING creates banks CUSTOM 1 through CUSTOM 7, recalled with SELECT CUSTOM SETTING. There are no dial positions for banks on this body. Leave AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING on DISABLE unless you mean it — on ENABLE, every change silently rewrites the bank you are using; on DISABLE, unsaved changes are marked with red dots instead.

Try it now

Format the card, put the shutter dial at A and the aperture ring at f/4 — that is A mode — set FINE+RAW with LOSSLESS COMPRESSED, choose PROVIA or REALA ACE, and save it all as CUSTOM 1.
