Autofocus, set up right

What are the right autofocus settings on the Fujifilm X100VI — tracking, eye AF, subject detection, and the hybrid finder?

The answer — share this
Focus lever on C and AF MODE on TRACKING for anything that moves. Detection is a one-at-a-time choice — face/eye OR a subject category, because each switches the other off: ANIMAL means dogs and cats only, BIRD includes insects, AIRPLANE includes drones. And in the optical finder, expect parallax at close range: the corrected AF frame tells the truth at about 50 cm, and the ERF window exists only with single-point AF.
AF MODE: AF/MF SETTING → AF MODE → TRACKING (focus mode C)  ·  Face/Eye: AF/MF SETTING → FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING → FACE DETECTION ON  ·  Subject: AF/MF SETTING → SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING → SUBJECT DETECTION ON  ·  Finder: AF/MF SETTING → CORRECTED AF FRAME → ON

Decision 1

The lever, and tracking’s other name

MENU→AF/MF SETTING→AF MODE

The body’s focus selector chooses S, C or M. AF MODE’s area list follows the lever: in S it is SINGLE POINT / ZONE / WIDE / ALL; in C the wide area is renamed TRACKING — SINGLE POINT / ZONE / TRACKING / ALL. For single-point selection, NUMBER OF FOCUS POINTS (AF/MF SETTING) offers 117 points (9 × 13) or 425 points (17 × 25). AF-C CUSTOM SETTINGS holds six tuning sets, from MULTI PURPOSE to IGNORE OBSTACLES & CONTINUE TO TRACK SUBJECT.

Decision 2

Whose eyes, which subject

MENU→AF/MF SETTING→SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING

FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING: FACE DETECTION ON opens EYE AUTO, RIGHT EYE PRIORITY, LEFT EYE PRIORITY, or EYE OFF for faces alone. SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING names a category, scoped exactly by the manual: ANIMAL detects dogs and cats; BIRD covers birds and insects; AUTOMOBILE the body or front ends of cars; MOTORCYCLE&BIKE the riders of motorcycles and bicycles; AIRPLANE the cockpits, noses or bodies of airplanes and drones; TRAIN the driver compartments or front ends of trains.

Decision 3

One detection at a time

MENU→AF/MF SETTING→FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING

The manual’s rule, both directions: enabling Intelligent Face Detection via FACE DETECTION ON automatically selects OFF for SUBJECT DETECTION SETTING — and enabling subject detection automatically selects OFF for FACE/EYE DETECTION SETTING. One or the other, never both; switching one silently kills the other. Choose per subject: people get face/eye, animals and machines get their category.

Decision 4

The hybrid finder’s two truths

MENU→AF/MF SETTING→CORRECTED AF FRAME

The selector lever switches EVF ↔ OVF; pulled with the OVF displayed, it opens the ERF — an electronic focus-preview window inside the optical finder, available only when SINGLE POINT is selected for AF mode. Parallax is real in the OVF: the finder window sits a slight distance from the lens, so close subjects shift against the bright frame, which itself moves at half-press to show the actual crop. CORRECTED AF FRAME adds a guide frame for the true focus position at about 50 cm — and shows nothing closer than that. The EVF covers 100% of the frame and never parallaxes.

Try it now

Track a person with the lever on C and AF MODE on TRACKING; swap SUBJECT DETECTION to ANIMAL for a pet and watch face/eye switch off; then focus at 50 cm in the OVF with CORRECTED AF FRAME on.
