Common fixes

What fixes the R8's known problems — 4K clips that stop early, focus breathing, the wrong subject, manual lenses?

THE ANSWER
4K stops early: low-level format the card, use a V60 card for 4K 10-bit, and plan around 40 minutes per LP-E17. Breathing: Focus breathing correction, with Distortion correction on first. Wrong subject: Subject to detect. Manual lens: let the shutter release without a lens.
4K: Set-up → Format card → Low level format · Breathing: Shooting → Lens aberration correction → Focus breathing correction · Subject: AF → Subject to detect · Manual lens: Custom Functions → Release shutter w/o lens → ON

4K clips stop long before the card fillsLow level format, a fast enough card, a fresh battery.

MENU → Set-up → Format card → Low level format before 4K recording. 4K 59.94 in 10-bit needs a V60 card by Canon’s requirements, and one LP-E17 is good for roughly 40 minutes of 4K 59.94 — most stopped clips are the battery. A hot camera offers less time.

MENU → Shooting → Lens aberration correction. The item appears only when Distortion correction is set to Enable, and it is a movie-only correction that narrows the angle of view slightly.

Focus locks the wrong subjectCheck Subject to detect.

MENU → AF → Subject to detect. A subject left over from the last shoot is the usual cause. For portraits, set Eye detection to the near eye.

Manual lens: dead shutterRelease shutter w/o lens → ON.

Custom Functions → Release shutter w/o lens → ON, so the shutter fires with a contactless lens. This body has no stabilizer of its own and no focal-length entry — a manual lens without IS shoots unstabilized.

Low level format your card now (after offloading it), then open Subject to detect and confirm it names what you're shooting today — not yesterday.
