Video settings, in depth

What are the right video settings on the R7 — formats, Canon Log 3, and true slow motion?

https://camerasdecoded.com/camera-select/canon/eos-r7/video-settings.html
THE ANSWER
4K UHD Fine for quality at 30p and under, UHD 59.94 when the motion matters, Canon Log 3 only when the footage will be graded, Full HD 119.88 for quarter-speed slow motion — and the day planned in breaks and spare batteries, because this body has no heat setting.
Movie rec. size: 4K UHD Fine 29.97 / 4K UHD 59.94 · Canon Log settings → Canon Log: On (C.LOG3) for graded work · View Assist: On · High Frame Rate: 119.88 fps → 1/4-speed playback, no sound · Per movie: 6 hr max

DECISION 1

Three 4K sizes, three jobs

MENU→Shooting→Movie rec. size

Every normal movie is MP4 in IPB (Standard) or IPB (Light). 4K UHD Fine is the quality size, capped at 29.97p. 4K UHD reaches 59.94p for motion. 4K UHD Crop records 59.94p from a narrower area of the sensor — reach at the cost of width. ALL-I exists here only for time-lapse movies. At 4K in 10-bit, Canon’s card requirements ask for V60.

DECISION 2

Log is one switch here

MENU→Shooting→Canon Log settings

Canon Log → On (C.LOG3) records Canon Log 3 in 10-bit 4:2:2 — flat, wide, built to be graded. The manual states the full dynamic range (approx. 1600%) arrives at ISO 800 or higher; ISO 100–640 is expanded and narrower, so do not base log exposure down there. View Assist shows viewable color on screen while the file stays flat. Canon Log and Canon Log 2 are not on this body. Shipping ungraded? Leave log off.

DECISION 3

Quarter speed, and silent

MENU→Shooting→Movie rec. size

High Frame Rate recording reaches 119.88 fps in Full HD, written as a 29.97 fps file — playback is 1/4 speed with the slow motion already in it. Sound is not recorded in High Frame Rate movies, and one clip can run up to 1 hour 30 minutes. 119.88 fps is this body’s ceiling.

DECISION 4

Plan breaks, not settings

MENU→Shooting→Movie rec. size

A single normal movie can run up to 6 hours, and the body runs on the LP-E6NH battery family with USB power an option. Heat is managed by behavior — the manual’s temperature icons mean stop and let the camera cool — and there is no [Auto pwr off temp.] setting on this body to raise any limit. Long days are planned in spare batteries, shade and breaks.

TRY IT NOW

Shoot the same 20-second scene three ways — 4K UHD Fine with Canon Log off, Log 3 with View Assist on at ISO 800, and a 119.88 fps High Frame Rate take — and compare what each decision asks of you.
