Video settings, in depth

What are the right video settings on the R5 — formats, two Canon Logs, and true limits?

THE ANSWER, UP FRONT

8K when the job wants it and the CFexpress card is in, 4K for the everyday work, Canon Log 3 when a grade is planned (the original Canon Log lives here too), 119.9 for quarter-speed — and the day planned around this body's real limits: 29 minutes 59 a movie, roughly 20 minutes of 8K before heat calls time.

Movie rec. size: Shooting → Movie rec quality · SD cannot record: RAW movies · 8K ALL-I · 4K 119.9 · 4K 59.94 — CFexpress required · Canon Log settings → Canon Log: On (C.LOG3), full range at ISO 800+ · High Frame Rate: 119.9 fps → 1/4 speed, max 7 min 29 s · Heat: Auto pwr off temp. → High

Deep steps are Pro
Decision 1

8K, 4K — and the card wall

MENU→Shooting→Movie rec. size

Sizes run from 8K DCI and 8K UHD through 4K (59.94p full-width, plus the higher-quality 4K HQ mode) to Full HD. Compression: RAW (Standard or Light) for 8K RAW movies; ALL-I, IPB (Standard) and IPB (Light) for MP4. The wall: RAW movies, 8K ALL-I, 4K 119.9 and 4K 59.94 cannot be recorded to SD cards — they need the CFexpress card. 8K IPB to SD asks for V60 (8-bit) or V90 (10-bit). Low level format before 8K or 4K. 8K and 4K are unavailable with crop lenses or Movie cropping on.

Decision 2

Two Canon Logs live here

MENU→Shooting→Canon Log settings

On (Canon Log): the original curve, 10-bit, full dynamic range of about 800% at ISO 400 or higher. On (C.LOG3): about 1600% at ISO 800 or higher. Both record 10-bit 4:2:2; the expanded low ISOs (100–320 / 100–640) are narrower in range. Canon Log 2 is not supported. View Assist shows viewable color on screen while the file stays flat. For RAW movies, the manual recommends Canon Log for highlight gradation. Shipping ungraded? Leave both off.

Decision 3

Quarter speed, silent, seven minutes

MENU→Shooting→Movie rec. size

High Frame Rate recording reaches 119.88 fps in 4K or Full HD, written as a 29.97 fps file — playback is 1/4 speed with the slow motion already in it. One High Frame Rate movie can run at most 7 minutes 29 seconds; sound is not recorded; ISO tops out at 12800. 4K 119.9 cannot record to an SD card.

Decision 4

Three numbers, two settings

MENU→Shooting→Auto pwr off temp.

A normal movie stops at 29 minutes 59 seconds. The specifications cap 8K recording at about 20 minutes and 4K 60p cropped recording at about 25 minutes at room temperature, by temperature rise. Auto pwr off temp. set to High reduces automatic shutoffs over a hot card; Standby: Low res. On cools the standby screen. When the temperature icons appear: stop, let the camera cool, and leave a hot card in the camera until it has cooled.

Try it now: Shoot the same 20-second scene four ways — 4K with Canon Log off, original Canon Log at ISO 400, Log 3 with View Assist at ISO 800, and a 119.88 fps High Frame Rate take — and compare what each decision asks of you.
