Common fixes
What fixes the R5's known problems — recording that stops hot, movies the SD card refuses, adapted lenses?
THE ANSWER, UP FRONT
Recording stopped hot: the temperature icons mean stop and let it cool — 8K carries a roughly 20-minute heat limit in Canon's own specifications, and a hot card stays in the camera. A movie that refuses the SD card is asking for the CFexpress slot. An adapted lens needs permission to fire plus its focal length. And breathing has no correction on this body.
Heat: Shooting (movies) → Auto pwr off temp. → High · Standby: Low res. → On · SD refusals: RAW movies / 8K ALL-I / 4K 119.9 / 4K 59.94 need CFexpress · Adapted lens: Custom Functions → Release shutter w/o lens → ON + IS mode → Focal length · Breathing: no correction item on this body
Recording stops — and the icon is red
It is a limit, not a fault: the specifications cap 8K recording at about 20 minutes and 4K 60p cropped at about 25 minutes at room temperature, and every normal movie stops at 29:59. When the white or red temperature icon appears, stop recording and let the camera cool. Auto pwr off temp. set to High reduces automatic shutoffs over a hot card; Standby: Low res. On keeps standby cooler. A hot card stays in the camera until it has cooled — pulling it immediately is how cards get dropped and damaged.
It will not record — to this card
RAW movies, 8K ALL-I, 4K 119.9/100.0 and 4K 59.94/50.00 cannot be recorded to SD cards — those formats record to the CFexpress card or not at all. A single movie file over 4 GB also cannot be recorded to an SD card (SDHC splits the movie into separate files). 8K IPB to SD needs V60 at 8-bit or V90 at 10-bit.
It won’t fire — and it won’t steady
A manual or adapted lens with no electronic contacts fails twice: the shutter will not fire until Release shutter w/o lens is set to Enable (Custom Functions tab), and the in-body stabilizer cannot work until [Focal length] is set to the lens’s length in IS (Image Stabilizer) mode. The manual ties them: with release-without-lens disabled, stabilization is prevented.
The honest answer: it isn’t here
Focus breathing — the frame pulsing at the edges as focus racks — is corrected on some Canons by a Focus breathing correction item. This body does not have it: the words appear nowhere in its manual, and Lens aberration correction here covers illumination, distortion, chromatic aberration and diffraction only. Manage breathing with lens choice, shorter focus throws, and cuts.
