The Key Setting

The A7IV's 10fps mechanical burst is adequate for most sports but is not class‑leading. Its real sports strength is the AF system inherited from the A1/A7R V lineage — the tracking is sticky and reliable. Set "AF Track Sens" to 2 (responsive) for sports where subjects change speed or direction frequently. Use "AF Area" set to "Tracking: Expand Spot" — place the initial focus point on your subject, and the camera will track them across the frame. For sports where obstacles cross between you and the subject (e.g., football, soccer), set "AF Track Sens" to 1 (locked on) so the AF doesn't jump to a passing player.

Sony FE 70‑200mm f/2.8 GM II
The standard sports zoom — fast, sharp, and weather‑sealed. Pair with the 1.4x teleconverter for extra reach (100‑280mm f/4) without sacrificing critical AF performance. Ideal for field sports in bright light.
Sony FE 100‑400mm f/4.5‑5.6 GM
For outdoor field sports where you need the reach. The f/4.5‑5.6 variable aperture is no limitation in bright natural light, and the zoom range lets you track the action from the sidelines to the far end of the pitch.

"Ten frames per second is enough. The decisive moment is not found in burst rate. It is found in anticipation. The A7IV rewards the photographer who reads the play before it happens."
