The Key Setting

Real estate photography has one problem that no single exposure solves — the window. Every interior shot contains windows that blow out to pure white when the interior is correctly exposed, or an interior that goes completely dark when the window is correctly exposed. The operator solution is exposure bracketing. Go to the camera menu, find Bracket Settings, set to three frames at two stop increments — one frame at correct interior exposure, one two stops overexposed, one two stops underexposed. The A7IV shoots all three frames automatically in a single burst. In post processing blend the correctly exposed interior with the correctly exposed window from the bracketed frames. This is not an advanced technique — it is the standard real estate photography workflow and the A7IV's bracketing system makes it completely accessible to any operator who knows it exists. Enable it before every interior shot. Additionally set White Balance to a specific Kelvin value — 3800K-4200K — rather than Auto. Auto White Balance shifts between frames in a bracketed sequence producing inconsistent color across the three exposures that makes blending difficult in post. A fixed Kelvin value produces consistent color across all three frames and makes the blending workflow straightforward.

Sony FE 16‑35mm f/4 G
The definitive real estate lens for the A7IV system — wide enough to convey room scale accurately, sharp enough at f/8–f/11 to render architectural detail precisely, and compact enough to maneuver in furnished interior spaces.
Sony FE 12‑24mm f/4 G
Extends coverage to genuinely ultra‑wide focal lengths for particularly small rooms or dramatic establishing shots. Note that it introduces barrel distortion that requires correction in post.

"The room is already there. The light is already there. The operator's job is to specify the exposure that reveals both simultaneously. The bracket is not a crutch. It is the correct tool for the correct problem. Using it is not a compromise. It is operator precision."
