Sony A7IV Portrait Overcast Settings
The Key Setting
Overcast light is the portrait photographer's secret weapon, and most operators treat it as a compromise rather than an advantage. An overcast sky acts as a giant diffusion panel — it wraps light around the subject from multiple angles simultaneously, eliminating the harsh shadows under eyes, nose, and chin that direct sunlight creates. The result is flattering, even, dimensional light that requires no reflector, no diffuser, and no artificial fill. The A7IV operator's specific advantage in overcast conditions is the ability to use any aperture from f1.4 to f8 without worrying about directional shadow management — the light handles itself. Set White Balance to Cloudy rather than Auto in overcast conditions. Auto White Balance on the A7IV reads the cool blue‑gray cast of an overcast sky and attempts to neutralize it, producing a slightly cold, clinical rendering on skin tones. Cloudy White Balance adds approximately 200–300 Kelvin of warmth that counteracts the natural blue cast of diffused sky light and produces skin tones that feel natural and flattering rather than cool and clinical. Switch to Kelvin Custom at 6000–6500K for precise control if the Cloudy preset feels too warm for your specific environment.

"The clouds diffused the light for you. The reflector stayed in the bag. The fill card stayed home. The operator who recognizes overcast as an advantage arrives prepared to use it. Everyone else waits for the sun."
