Sony A7IV Event Golden Hour Settings
The Key Setting
Golden hour events—weddings, garden parties, sunset receptions—are among the most demanding scenarios for any camera because the light is both beautiful and rapidly changing. The Sony A7IV’s AF Subject Shift Sensitivity is the hidden advantage here. Assign it to a custom button so you can toggle it in real time: set to 1 (Locked On) when tracking a specific person through a crowd (e.g., the couple during their first dance as the sun sets), and 5 (Responsive) when you need to quickly switch between different faces during receiving lines or group interactions. This single setting, used actively during the event, prevents the AF from jumping to background guests and keeps your primary subject sharp even as the golden light fades and the AF system has less contrast to work with.
Use Manual mode with Auto ISO to lock in your aperture and shutter speed while letting the camera ride the exposure changes as the golden light dims. Enable Highlight Metering to protect the warm rim light on faces from clipping to pure white. For backlit golden hour scenes, switch to Spot Metering linked to the active focus point; the camera will expose for the subject’s face, allowing the golden background to bloom naturally into a warm, glowing wash without underexposing the subject.
The A7IV’s 10 fps mechanical burst is fast enough to capture micro‑expressions during golden hour conversations and laughter. Enable Silent Shooting during quiet ceremony moments, but be aware of potential banding under artificial lights if the golden hour event moves indoors. The A7IV’s electronic shutter is fast enough for most natural‑light event work without rolling shutter distortion.

"The golden light is temporary. The A7IV’s AF is not. Let the machine track the eyes. You track the moments. When the light fades, the sensor will still be working. So must you."
