The Key Setting

The Sony A6700 has a portrait rendering system that most owners never find because Sony redesigned and renamed it in the A6700 generation without clearly communicating the change. Creative Looks replaces the older Creative Style system found on previous Sony bodies. Go to shooting menu, Creative Look, and select PT which stands for Portrait. The PT Creative Look on the A6700 applies a rendering profile specifically calibrated for skin tone reproduction — it adds subtle warmth to the red-orange channel, lifts shadows slightly to prevent the underexposed look that flat overcast light can produce, and applies a gentle contrast curve that makes portrait files feel dimensional without the clinical sharpness of the standard rendering. Beyond Creative Looks the A6700 has a specific overcast portrait advantage most operators never discuss — the Soft Skin Effect. Go to shooting menu, Soft Skin Effect, and set it to Low. At the Low setting the A6700 applies a subtle frequency-separation style smoothing to skin texture in JPEG files that reduces the appearance of pores and minor blemishes without producing the artificial plastic look that higher settings create. In overcast conditions where the even soft light renders skin texture with maximum fidelity this subtle smoothing produces portrait JPEGs that clients find immediately flattering without requiring post processing. Shoot RAW plus JPEG simultaneously — the RAW retains full skin texture for detailed retouching while the JPEG with Soft Skin Effect at Low provides an immediately shareable file that looks professional straight from the camera. Additionally the A6700's crop factor creates a specific overcast compositional advantage — at 35mm full frame equivalent 52mm the overcast sky fills less of the frame than it would at wider focal lengths on a full frame camera producing a naturally graduated overcast background that feels intentional rather than accidental.

Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS
The 52mm full‑frame equivalent standard prime. Its natural perspective and built‑in OSS produce intimate overcast portraits where the graduated sky becomes part of the composition. Light, sharp, and stabilised.
Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary
At f/1.4 in overcast conditions, this lens produces portrait files with a rendering quality that surprises full‑frame shooters. Combined with the A6700's Creative Look PT, it creates dimensional images that competing APS‑C systems cannot match.

"The Creative Look was set to Portrait before the session began. The Soft Skin Effect was enabled before the subject arrived. The overcast sky diffused the light before the camera was raised. Three systems working simultaneously before a single frame was captured. The operator who configures before the moment arrives shoots. Everyone else adjusts after it passes."
