Autofocus, set up right

How do you set up the a6700's AI autofocus so it holds your subject?

The answer — share this
AF-C, a Tracking area for movers, and the Recognition Target named exactly — Human, Bird, Insect, even a train. The AI unit does the rest.
Focus Mode: AF-C  ·  Focus Area: Tracking  ·  Subject Recog in AF: On  ·  Recognition Target: your subject  ·  Right/Left Eye Select: the near eye

Step 1

Tracking needs Continuous AF

MENU→Focus→AF/MF→Focus Mode

Every Tracking focus area depends on AF-C: the camera keeps adjusting while you hold the button. AF-S locks once — right for still life, wrong for anything that breathes or walks.

Step 2

Pick the area by the subject

MENU→Focus→Focus Area→Focus Area

Wide guesses at the whole frame. Zone works a patch of it. Spot: S/M/L and Expand Spot take one exact point. Add Tracking to any of them and the area follows a moving subject across the frame — Tracking: Zone is the home most shooters should live in.

Step 3

Name the subject exactly

MENU→Focus→Subject Recognition→Recognition Target

The AI processing unit tunes itself to the named subject: Human, Animal/Bird, Animal, Bird, Insect, Car/Train, Airplane. When you know the subject, name it exactly — the combined Animal/Bird target is for days when you don't know what will show up.

Step 4

Tell it which eye

MENU→Focus→Subject Recognition→Right/Left Eye Select

For portraits, set Right/Left Eye Select to the eye nearer the camera. The camera holds that eye instead of flipping between the two mid-burst — and the near eye is the one depth of field forgives least.

Try it now

Set AF-C and Tracking: Zone, name today's subject under Recognition Target, then track something moving across the frame and watch the area follow instead of hunting.
