Custom buttons, your way
Which custom button setup is right for the Sony a6400?
Three maps, not one
The assignable bench: Custom Button 1, the AEL button, the Fn button, the control wheel’s center/left/right/down, Custom Button 2, and the focus-hold button on lenses that have one. The structure that matters: stills, movies and playback each keep their own [Custom Key] set. The movie set can be set to Follow Custom to mirror the stills map.
Hold for eyes, hold for tracking
AEL button → Eye AF — the pairing Sony’s own guide demonstrates: hold it and the camera focuses on eyes across the whole screen whatever the focus area says; release and your area returns. Custom Button 1 → Tracking On: hold to temporarily turn your area into its Tracking twin. Center button → Focus Standard, for moving the focus frame with the wheel.
The lens has a button too
Shooting functions can also be assigned to the focus-hold button on the lens — the one control reachable without changing your grip on a long lens. Dress the playback set too: Rating on a wheel direction makes culling a one-thumb job.
Build the map: AEL to Eye AF, C1 to Tracking On, movie set to Follow Custom — then test both holds on someone moving through the room.
