Common fixes
Why does a Nikon Z8 stop recording, soften a frame, or save video to the other card — and what fixes it?

The answer — share this
Most Z8 grief is four things: heat ending a take (by design), video following Destination instead of the stills slots, a card below the speed floor for the job, and a detection category that does not match the subject.
Heat: stop at the countdown; cards may be hot · Video card: Video Recording Menu → Destination · Speed floors: 250 MB/s class for HSFC+ and high-rate video · Detection: Photo Shooting Menu → AF/MF subject detection options
Cameras Decoded — Camera Select
Recording stops earlyHeat or the 125-minute cap — working as designed. Each shot may run up to 125 minutes, and the Auto temperature cutout (Setup Menu, Standard or High) escalates through warning icons to a countdown, then shuts the camera off. High buys more time; the body may become hot to the touch. Treat a card fresh from a long take as hot, too — the camera warns about memory card temperature for a reason.
Video on the wrong cardDestination, not the stills slots. Videos ignore Primary slot selection and Secondary slot function entirely. With two cards in, they record to the slot chosen at Video Recording Menu → Destination. Set it once, deliberately.
Recording interrupts; bursts stutterThe card is below the speed floor for the job. Nikon's floors: CFexpress/XQD at 250 MB/s class for high-speed frame capture + and for high frame size/rate video; for video generally, 45 MB/s-class CFexpress/XQD or UHS Speed Class 3 SD. Slower media may interrupt recording or playback — the manual says so in those words.
Frames softer than 45.7 MP should beNot the shutter — there isn't one. The Z8's shutter is electronic only (a sensor shield closes at power off), so shutter shock does not exist here. Soft frames at modest speeds are usually subject movement that 45.7 megapixels finally lets you see, or focus a breath off. Raise the shutter speed; tighten and re-place the AF area.
Bands under indoor lightFlicker — and one setting that disables its cure. Use Photo/Video flicker reduction, and High-frequency flicker reduction for LED sources. But note: Custom Setting g13 Shutter mode set to shutter angle disables high-frequency flicker reduction — switch g13 back to shutter speed to get it back. Test under the actual lights before the event.
Detection misses the subjectWrong category — or outside Nikon's own conditions. Match the category to the subject: the whole fleet is Vehicle; birds have their own category beside Animal; mixed subjects belong on Auto. And respect the caution list — faces too large or small, harsh light, covered eyes. Photo and video keep separate detection choices; set both.
Battery dies before the story doesAbout 85 minutes of video per EN-EL15c is the plan. Nikon rates one EN-EL15c at roughly 340 shots, or about 85 minutes of video footage — and Extended oversampling drains it faster. Carry charged spares, or the MB-N12 power battery pack for long video days.
Two features worth the menusAuto Capture shoots without you; Pixel shift out-resolves the sensor. Photo Shooting Menu → Auto Capture starts stills or video when a subject meets your motion, distance and detection conditions. Pixel shift shooting records a shifted series of frames to merge into one higher-resolution still — tripod work for architecture and product.

Check Destination, match your detection category to this week's subject, set the temperature cutout deliberately — then open Auto Capture and let the camera take one picture without you.
