Common fixes

Why did your Panasonic Lumix S5 II stop recording at 30 minutes, why does V-Log look flat, and why did backup recording quit? The four fixes, from the manual.

The answer — share this
The four classics, all in the manual: a 6K take that stops near 30 minutes is Recording Max Temperature on STANDARD doing its stated job; a flat, dark monitor on V-Log is log without its View Assist LUT; backup recording that quits is a mismatched card pair; and a video frame tighter than your stills frame is E-Stabilization narrowing the view, or 4K 60p's APS-C area.

Recording stopped at about 30 minutesRecording Max Temperature is on STANDARD. For the 6K/30p, 6K/25p, 5.9K/30p and 5.9K/25p qualities, the manual's Rec Quality footnote states that at STANDARD, recording stops once continuous recording exceeds 30 minutes. For long takes set Setup (Monitor / Display) → Thermal Management → Recording Max Temperature to HIGH and Fan Mode to AUTO1 — and use a tripod: at HIGH the body gets hot, and Panasonic warns of low-temperature burns from prolonged contact. There is no per-movie cap on this body; files segment instead (about 3 h 04 min per MOV file on SDXC).
V-Log looks flat and dark on the monitorThat is log without its preview. The manual notes the recording screen darkens with V-Log — the contrast is being saved for grading. Custom (Monitor / Display (Video)) → V-Log View Assist: choose the LUT (Vlog_709 or a LUT Library file) under LUT Select and turn LUT View Assist (Monitor) — and, for an external screen, LUT View Assist (HDMI) — on. The file stays flat; only the preview is graded. If you do not grade, shoot REAL TIME LUT instead and record the look directly. View Assist is unavailable when a LUT is already baked into the Photo Style.
Backup recording stopped or refusedThe card pair is mismatched. For Backup Rec, Panasonic recommends cards of the same Speed Class and the same capacity, and states plainly: if the card Speed Class or capacity is insufficient when recording video, recording to both cards stops. SDHC-plus-SDXC pairings cannot back up video at all. Buy cards in matched pairs, format both in the camera, and keep the pair together.
The video frame is tighter than the stills frameE-Stabilization, or the 4K 60p image area. E-Stabilization (Video) narrows the angle of view when on — narrower still at HIGH (firmware Ver. 3.0's three-step version: HIGH / STANDARD / OFF). Separately, 4K/C4K at 59.94p and 50p record from the APS-C image area, framing roughly 1.5× tighter than the FULL-area 30p qualities. Compare with E-Stabilization OFF and at 4K/30p before suspecting the lens.
Try it now

Audit your card pair, set Fan Mode AUTO1, read the Thermal Management screen, then cycle E-Stabilization OFF → STANDARD → HIGH on a framed shot and watch the edges. Finish by toggling LUT View Assist on a V-Log scene.
