A Free RAW Editor That Teaches You How to Edit
What is Photon?
Photon is a new RAW photo editor from Aftershoot, the company known for AI-driven editing tools for professional photographers. Unlike its pro products, Photon is aimed at the other end of the spectrum: photographers who shoot RAW but never learned how to edit, because every serious editor assumed they already knew.
The centerpiece is an AI Coach. Where most editing software hands you a wall of sliders and leaves you to figure them out, Photon's coach tells you what you may want to adjust in a given photo and explains why. Take the suggestion or leave it — the manual tools are all there, and the user stays in complete control throughout.
Why does RAW editing need a teacher?
Shooting RAW is easy now. Every mirrorless camera offers it, and the files hold dramatically more color and highlight information than JPEGs. But RAW files look flat straight out of camera by design — they are meant to be processed. Aftershoot's point is that most RAW editors were built for professionals, with subscriptions and complex tools that assume you know what each slider does.
That mismatch is where a generation of photographers gets stuck. They bought into RAW because their camera offered it, then opened a professional editor and quietly went back to JPEGs. Photon is built on the bet that editing is a learned skill, not an innate one, and that the software itself should be the teacher.
What does it cost, and what does it support?
Photon is free, with no credit card required. It supports RAW and JPEG files from a wide range of cameras — recent iPhones, most Canon DSLRs and mirrorless bodies, many Fujifilm cameras, and models from Nikon, Sony, OM System, Panasonic, and more. Aftershoot built its own RAW processing engine from scratch, calibrating color with DCP profiles from Adobe's DNG Converter.
Support for additional models rolls out based on user demand, taking anywhere from a month to a year to add. It is available now for macOS and Windows.
Why it matters for you
If you shoot RAW and your edits feel like guesswork, the problem was never your eye — it was the missing feedback loop. An editor that explains the why behind each adjustment compresses years of trial and error into your first dozen sessions. And if you have been avoiding RAW entirely because the editing felt intimidating, the barrier just dropped to zero dollars. Download it, feed it a flat RAW file, and let the coach walk you through your first proper edit.
