Parents Are Using AI for School Photos Instead of Photographers
How does the 'mom hack' work?
A TikTok parent went viral after describing what she called a mom hack: photograph three children against a plain backdrop, upload the shots to ChatGPT, and prompt it to make it look like a school picture. The AI added a standard gradient backdrop and portrait styling, producing a result similar to the packages from big school-photography companies. The savings are real money for a family: school print packages typically run $25 to $60 per child.
How far has it spread?
The trend has crossed the Atlantic. The Times of London found that U.K. school photographers are seeing orders fall as parents use AI tools to remove watermarks from proof galleries instead of buying the prints. Lee Brooker, a school photographer of two decades and author of The School Photography Business Handbook, reports a slight decrease in sales. His bigger worry is safety: parents are uploading children's images into AI tools and Facebook groups of strangers to get watermarks removed, putting kids' photos into systems they cannot control.
What does the data say?
The Association of Photographers, a trade body representing about 3,000 U.K. photographers and assistants, reports that 58 percent of its members have lost commissioned work to AI, and more than two-thirds have experienced copyright infringement online. School photography is among the hardest hit, but wedding, baby portrait, and commercial photographers report the same pattern: clients using unlicensed or AI-generated images instead of commissioning the work. The association's chief executive says AI-assisted watermark removal is at another level compared with every earlier hack, because anyone can do it.
Why it matters for you
If you are learning photography with any eye on earning, do not build a business on what AI does for free. A backdrop, a gradient, and a smile are a commodity now; the experience around the portrait is not. The photographers who survive this shift will be the ones clients come to for something AI cannot hand them: real light on a real child, a session the family remembers, and the trust of a human being handling their children's images responsibly. Learn portraiture as an experience, not as a template, and price the part AI cannot copy.
