A Free iPad Editor Worth Taking Seriously
In short: Affinity for iPad is now available with its core sketch, vector, photo editing, and layout tools free for individuals, with a free Canva account required. Raw processing, masks, colour adjustments, and retouching are included; the newer AI tools sit behind a Canva premium plan.

What is actually free?

The core tools, not a trial of them. Canva's combined Affinity app for iPad includes photo editing with Raw processing, vector design, sketching, and page layout in one program, free for individuals. A free Canva account is required, and the optional AI tools, including generative expand, upscaling, motion blur reduction, and noise reduction, require a premium plan, priced at 18 dollars a month or 144 dollars a year in the US. The line is clear: the craft tools are free, the automation is paid.

What does it change for a photographer learning to edit?

It removes the subscription excuse. Editing is where most photographers stall, not because the tools are hard to find but because practising on a paid app feels like a commitment before you know whether you will stick with it. A free, full-strength editor on a tablet you already own lets you practise the fundamentals, masks, colour, retouching, on your own photos, at your own pace. The new Mask Tool, built for tracing difficult edges such as hair, fur, and foliage with a pencil, targets exactly the selections beginners struggle with, and keeping sketches, photos, and layouts in a single file means less time moving work between apps.

Why it matters for you

Learn the manual skills while they are free, and judge the AI tools later. If you can already mask cleanly, grade colour deliberately, and retouch without erasing texture, you will know exactly what an AI tool is saving you, and when it is costing you control. If you cannot, the AI will decide for you. Download the free core, edit ten of your own photos end to end, and let that practice, not a subscription, decide what you need next.
